It is believed that you can become a villain or die as a hero. The movie’s protagonist Christian Bale has indeed turned villain, this time in Marvel in Thor: Love and Thunder. The antagonist is formidable, and the plot is true to the comic-book storyline as well and brings back the crowd-favourite, Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Taika Waititi’s hilarious wit is obvious. However, Love and Thunder, although a strong independent film, fails to live up to the previous Thor film, Thor: Ragnarok (2017).

Thor has been a element of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for more than a decade however his stand-alone films have either hit the bullseye or have missed it completely. Thor: The Dark World (2013) was an awful entry. Thor: The Origins Story (2011) was a solid start. In the end, everyone’s list of the top five MCU films would include Thor: Ragnarok (2017) for sure. The Return of the Hemsworth/Taika Waititi collaboration meant that expectations were high prior to the release.
Gorr (Bale), a god who wants to exterminate all gods, makes an appearance in New Asgard to steal Stormbreaker. Thor must stop the god-killer by joining with Tessa Thompson, Korg (Waititi), and Jane Foster, his ex-girlfriend and now Mighty Thor. This film is simple and straightforward, which marks a departure from Marvel’s previous films. The performances are positively. Hemsworth is the main character, who is suffering from a midlife crisis. However, Bale as well as Portman are outstanding. The scene that opens the title credits is a good example of what Bale can do. Gorr could well be the next Thanos for an MCU that’s in need of good supervillains, and Bale is able to bring a certain oddity to the character but there’s not much of a lot more.
Portman is Mjolnir’s ex-girlfriend who has cancer. Given how Marvel seems to be committed to handing over the mantles of Hawkeye and, in a couple of weeks, Hulk, to women characters, I had hoped for the Mighty Thor to be a similar mark on the representation checklist. The film, however, builds with a touching story behind the astrophysicist who can demonstrate her biceps in more than one scene.
Marvel is known for its own flexing through the many cameos in the film. We also see the Guardians of the Galaxy cast with Sam Neill and Matt Damon reprising their roles as Thor: Ragnarok’s Loki, Odin and Thor, respectively. We also have Melissa McCarthy and her husband Ben Falcone playing Hela and the director of the Asgardian play in the respective roles. Waititi, who is now Ragnarok directed the Oscar-winning Jojo Rabbit, is back in his preferred genre. It’s hilarious to watch an image of a couple of loud goats as well as Korg’s narration about Thor’s backstory. Thor does leg-splits. Valkyrie becomes Old Spice’s ambassador.
The premise is that Thor would like to get his Mjolnir but is scared of the jealousy of Stormbreaker. The problem is that these gags though they are effective, come at the expense of deep emotion , and also expose the wafer-thin plot as well. Thor: Love and Thunder examines all kinds of love, from father-daughter bonds to intricate romances between distant lovers… There is the possibility of Gorr losing his respect towards Rapu and Thor becoming disappointed with Zeus (played in this film by Russell Crowe). The ideas are endless, however…
As always, there are plenty of easter eggs as well as references to movies like Interstellar and Harry Potter. A shot of Falligar Dead God, is shown, straight from comics. We see Hemsworth dressed in the original Thor costumes that comic book fans will recognise. When he is fighting Zeus, Thor reveals his true colors. We can also see a tattoo stating ‘RIP Loki The helmet of the trickster on our Viking’s back. The dark Necrosword is revealed and it’s fascinating to see how other weapons are revealed to be able to control people, especially given how Stormbreaker and Mjolnir seem to have their own thoughts.
We have seen this with the ten rings from Shang Chi, the magical Bangle from Ms Marvel, and the Ebony Blade from the post credits scene in Eternals. The sentence “Gods will not empower you, but they will use you” from Marvel’s new show, Moonknight, feels very relatable. Some of the loss that Valkyrie suffered in war to her greatest friend and Korg falling for another Kronan man is included.
The first part of the movie reminds us of all the colour we enjoyed in Ragnarok However, the majority of the second part is set in a dark realm where everything is monochrome and black. The action scenes in monochrome can be extremely satisfying and should be noted.
Hemsworth will continue to remain in the role of Thor The news is an enormous relief for MCU fans who’ve seen the original Avengers die or hang their heads.
